8 Steps to Prepare for a Professional Headshots Session

In today’s digital world it is more important than ever to be professionally represented on your company’s website, your LinkedIn profile, as well as your Zoom and Webex avatars. Well-planned location, outfit, as well as flattering hair and makeup are crucial for a successful photo shoot. Here I will answer a few frequently asked questions that will help you be well-prepared for your professional portrait session.
1. Preparation
Preparation is key when it comes to your professional headshots. First things first, make sure that you are well-rested before your headshot event. On the day of the shoot take a few minutes to clear your mind and relax before you stand in front of the camera.
2. Company culture
Make sure that what you wear fits well with your company’s image and culture.
3. Comfort
Make sure the outfit you choose is something you love and feel completely comfortable in. They need to look professional and be of the right size. If the clothes are too loose, your shape will be lost in the photo. Too tight, and you risk showing button holes pulling and seams stretching.
4. Patterns or Plain?
Strong patterns should be avoided on the day of the shoot. Most of the time, they only serve to distract. You want the viewer of the headshot to focus on you, so wear something that only adds to the image you’re trying to convey.
5. Colors
MID-TONE PLAIN COLORS are universally flattering and help the image stand out on a page. They convert well to black and white as well. Colors such as navy blue, chocolate, maroon, dark green, or lavender look great in photos. PASTEL COLORS, cream or beige, are often similar to flesh tones and can look washed-out and unflattering.
6. Bear arms or sleeves?
Avoid sleeveless tops, as bare arms highlight the contrast between the tone and color of your arms and your face. You also risk showing your armpits in certain poses, and that is best avoided unless it’s a style statement.
7. Jacket on, jacket off?
It is an easy way to create 2 different looks — jacket on and jacket off. If this is the path you’d like to follow, please make sure that the shirt/blouse under your jacket is spotless and wrinkle free. In this scenario we would start with the jacket off and then we would proceed with the jacket on.
8. What about my glasses?
